Before her visit to Middlesbrough in 2019, singer-songwriter Zara Larsson once thought “up for a parmo” sounded like some sort of award. Now, the local Teesside delicacy intends to be exactly that, as Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen campaigns to secure proud recognition by applying for its protected status.

The parmo, flattened chicken coated in breadcrumbs, deep fried, and covered in béchamel sauce & melted cheese, is considered to be a Teesside culinary institution since its creation in 1958. If it gains a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) status, it will be acknowledged alongside other well-known delights such as the Cornish pasty, Melton Mowbray pork pies, and Cheddar cheese.
